LIGHTNING FROM THE GENOME
(Previously published in "Poetry Soul to Soul")

99.9% of our genes are identical
One human to another
What difference, then is
One-tenth of a percent?
Enough to justify
Hatred, jealousy, contempt

War?

In one-tenth of one percent
We lodge the miseries of the
Human race
Proclaim ourselves better and

Best

Conquer and divide
According to divine rights of
A primitive mind
Unable to distinguish
Reason from insanity.

IN OUR LITTLE WORLDS
(Previously published in "Cerberus")

Boxed in tight corners of unreality

We believe we know
Understand, perceive
Things greater than
Platitudes served on chafing
Dishes
Forces over which we command

Nothing

Ideas promulgated without censure of
Fact
Yet so certain is our
Conviction
We would defend it, immorally

To the death.

THE ROAD TO BAGHDAD
(Previously published in "The Breath")

Tomorrow

With all its once unbounded prospects
Suddenly
Looks
Disturbingly short.

What demons have we called
From the depths of our fears
To lead, in bloody assault
This tragic war upon the world?

We will pay in blood, all of us
For years to come
Hatred lying in wait
For our unsuspecting

Children.
